CSJ weekly athletics roundup

The College of St. Joseph men’s and women’s basketball teams had yet another successful week in which they finished with a combined record of 4-1. It was their last week of the regular season, and they will be playing in the Yankee Small College Conference Tournament starting Friday, Feb. 19. The Lady Saints went a perfect 3-0 throughout the week and increased their current winning streak to an outstanding 23 games in a row. They are 25-1 overall this season and 13-0 in YSCC conference match-ups. Fighting Saints men’s basketball was 1-1 for the week after losing to a strong SUNY Canton team on Sunday. They are 18-8 overall this season and 12-1 in conference match-ups. Both teams are playing great ball as of late and are ready to begin post-season. Here is how the last week of the regular season went down.

Feb. 9

The Lady Saints started the week off with a blowout victory last against the VTC Knights ending with a final score of 100-20. Mookie Kennedy had a game high 27 points on 50 percent shooting from the field, to go along with nine steals. Regina Steele added 26 points on 12 of 15 shooting and also dominated the paint, pulling down an impressive 18 rebounds.

The men’s team played in a more tightly contested game against a well-coached VTC team. They battled and ended up beating the Knights 80-68. The reigning USCAA and YSCC Player of the Week Kareem Brown led the Fighting Saints to victory, scoring a game high 22 points and pulling down a game high 13 rebounds. It was a well-rounded victory for the Saints, who had five different players score in double digits. Travis Threewitts and Antonio Gordon each had 14 points, while Joshua McAfee and Kyle Houston added 13 and 10, respectively.

Feb. 11

The Lady Saints beat Quinsigamond Community College 84-21.

Feb. 14

The Lady Saints finished their regular season on a high note, taking down SUNY Canton 91-50. Regina Steele closed the season with a bang, having one of her most dominant performances of her impressive career. She finished with a big triple double, recording 32 points, 24 rebounds, and 14 blocks. Steele also had six steals to add to what was already a perfect night. Mookie Kennedy also carried the scoring load, ending up with 30 points on 12 of 20 shooting from the field.

The men’s team was not as fortunate against SUNY Canton. They played hard, but were outmatched, losing the game 69-93. Kareem Brown finished with game highs in points and rebounds, earning 21 and 10, but it was not enough to stifle the well- rounded attack of SUNY Canton. Antonio Gordon finished the game with 18 points for the Saints in the loss.
