3-year-old dies after being found in partially frozen stream at daycare

On Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016, at approximately 3:55 p.m., police received a 911 call regarding a child that had been located in a stream behind a daycare provider’s business in the town of Waterbury Center.

When family members arrived at Elephant in the Field, a licensed daycare provider, to pick up their 3-year-old child, staff members noticed that the child was unaccounted for. The child been with a group outside earlier that day. Shortly after they began searching for the child, staff members located the child floating in a partially frozen stream behind the business. They immediately removed the child from the stream and administered CPR and called 911. Waterbury rescue responded to the scene and transported the child to Central Vermont Hospital. The child was stabilized and transported to University of Vermont Medical Center. Police originally reported that the child was stabilized but still in critical condition, however, a subsequent release confirmed the child’s death.

The 3-year-old was identified as Parker Berry from Hyde Park, Vt. This investigation is still active and pending autopsy at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Vermont State Police detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.
