Friday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. — RUTLAND — The Castleton Downtown Gallery in Rutland will feature the works of Vermont artist Oliver Schemm running from Jan. 20 through Feb. 20, with an artist reception scheduled for Friday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m.

Entitled “Circles, Suitcases and Pramalots” the multimedia exhibit is centered around three installations, which are visual representations of memory, travel and exploration, and movement and human growth.

“My use of history, science, Deep Play, cold and warm materials, movement, tension, and a need to instill curiosity fuels my sculptures,” said Schemm. “I use multiple sculptural methods including assemblage, casting, and subtractive carving to make sculptures that all at once are functionless machines, shrines, and personal societal mile markers.”

Oliver Schemm is influenced by a wide variety of experiences and has imbued his sculptures with them. At different points in his life Schemm attended schools taught in French, Dutch, and English, and his early life was largely about adapting to new surroundings and cultures. Looking around closely at the art, history, literature and science of each particular place he lived filled out his understanding of what he was experiencing and led to his lifelong habit of synthesizing the information before him.

The Castleton Downtown Gallery is located on Center Street Alley in Rutland and is open Wednesday through Saturday with hours of operation from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
