With a rare off-week for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams at the College of St. Joseph, the college reflects on the season thus far.
The Lady Saints have been on another level all year. They are 13-1 on the season and are currently in the midst of an 11-game winning streak. Their one loss came from a well-respected NCAA Division I opponent, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), in a game that CSJ was only down by only two points at halftime. The Lady Saints are currently ranked No. 1 in the USCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Coaches Poll, No. 3 in the Women’s Power Rankings, and No. 1 in the overall standings.
The dominance of the women’s team has come in big thanks to the stellar play of last year’s National Player of the Year, Regina Steele. She has been nothing short of brilliant in the efficiency and aggressiveness of her play. Steele leads the nation in field goal percentage at 68.8 percent. She is also third in the USCAA in both rebounds per game and total blocks, at 13.7 and 52.
Mookie Kennedy has been carrying the scoring load for the Lady Saints all year long. She leads the YSCC conference in scoring at 20.6 points per game, which is also good enough to be tied for third in scoring in the USCAA.
The Fighting Saints men’s basketball team has found its stride as the postseason nears. They are 11-6 overall this season and winners of their last two ball games, which were against strong conference opponents. CSJ is currently ranked No. 6 in the USCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll and No. 16 in the men’s power rankings.
It has been a breakout season for Saints’ sixth-man Antonio Gordon. He leads the team in scoring at 14.6 points per game, playing only 19 minutes per game. Gordon also leads the YSCC in 3-point field goal percentage at 44.8 percent, which is also good enough for fourth in the USCAA.
Kyle Houston has had a nice year for the Fighting Saints as well. He leads the team in minutes, steals, and assists. He has been a workhorse, competing for every possession and doing all the little things to help the team succeed.
