CSJ weekly athletics roundup

It was a victorious week for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams at College of St. Joseph. The women’s team went 2-0 and the men’s team took care of business in their one and only game scheduled for the week. The Lady Saints now have an overall record of 9-1 and a perfect 4-0 conference record. They are currently ranked second in USCAA, only behind Penn State -Hazleton. The men’s team has an overall record of 9-4 and a conference record of 4-0. They are ranked fourth in USCAA. Here is a closer look at the games played this week.

Dec. 28

The Lady Saints started off the night pulling out a victory against Villa Maria at home, despite using only five players throughout the entire contest. It was a close game for the majority, but CSJ was eventually able to pull away at the end and finished with a final score of 71-61.

CSJ was led by the dominant play of Regina Steele, who controlled the game with her ability to clean up the glass and finish at the rim. She tallied a total of 20 points and 16 rebounds. Jazz Laracuente was also a big contributor for the Lady Saints. She led the team in scoring, ending up with 21 points, nine of which came courtesy of the long ball.

The men’s team followed suit and got a big win against a well-coached Villa Maria team.  The game was back and forth, but CSJ was able to outperform Villa Maria when the game mattered most, finishing them off with a final score of 86-69. It was a well-rounded effort from the Saints, who had ten different players score points throughout the game.

CSJ was led in scoring by Kyle Houston, who came off the bench to score a game high 20 points. Houston got most of his points from the charity stripe, going an impressive 13-14 from the line. Kareem Brown played big for the Saints down low and was able to control the paint all game long. He ended up with seven offensive and seven defensive rebounds to go along with his nine points.

Jan. 3

The Lady Saints ended the week with an 80-50 point blowout win against Penn State-Brandywine. CSJ was on their game, shooting 50% from the field as a team and controlling the pace of the game throughout.

Mookie Kennedy led CSJ in scoring, finishing with a game high 23 points. Regina Steele continued to dominate in this game, accumulating 19 rebounds, five blocked shots, five steals, and 18 points on 7 of 9 shooting from the field. The Lady Saints played a great all-around game and the final score is a tribute to that.
