Robber armed with knife confronted with machete

Submitted

Theodore Brand

Vermont State Police made an arrest in an armed robbery case that occurred on Dec. 14, when a man entered the Cavendish General Store, held a knife to attendant Lori Brand’s throat, and demanded cash from the register. Brand’s husband, Theodore Brand, was in the back of the store and rushed to the front to aid his wife. He confronted the subject with a machete: the suspect lunged at both victims with the knife but neither Brand was harmed. The suspect was struck by the machete but managed to leave the store with the cash register, which he dropped in the parking lot, and escaped on foot. He was seen leaving the area in a vehicle that he had parked nearby. VSP recovered evidence from the crime scene and video surveillance from other locations in the local area. After a day of investigation, state police were able to identify the suspect as Joshua Corliss, 33 years old, of Springfield. Corliss turned himself in to police on the night of Dec. 15.

Corliss is being charged with Assault and Robbery and Aggravated Assault and was scheduled to appear in Windsor Superior Court on Dec. 16. He is currently being held at the Southern State Correctional Facility on $50,000 bail. There was an active arrest warrant out for Corliss at the time of his arrest as well, for failing to appear in Windsor Court in October of 2015.
