Friday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. — BARNARD — The First Universalist Church on Rt. 12 in Barnard will host BarnArts 5th annual Winter Carols: Songs from a Small Planet at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec 18. Admission is free for this 75-minute performance including BarnArts Youth, BarnArts Chorale, cello ensemble Banish Misfortune, Kathleen Dolan and Mark van Gulden on vibes and flute, the old time fiddle music of the Scapegoats including Chloe Powell, Lizzy Bogosian and Justin Park, Scott Paulson’ Steep Pan Drums and teen trombonist Adam Farinas playing solo and with other WUHS students for a holiday medley. Musical director Judi Byron will perform and accompany on harp and guitar. This non-profit organization appreciates donations.
Byron states, “In this age of connectivity in a digital sense, music serves as a means of connectivity in a physical and spiritual sense. Research has shown choirs and groups that sing and play together have an increase in endorphin levels, the ‘feel good’ neurotransmitters in the brain. Singing and playing together just makes sense from a health perspective, especially in our increasingly fast paced world. It is in this spirit of connectivity, that I chose both the musical numbers for the youth and adult choirs as well as extended an invite to our many talented players. As genres, classical, jazz, folk, pop, and calypso/reggae are all represented; in terms of countries, we have selections from Europe, (France, England, Italy, Germany, Austria, the Ukraine), from North America, (the U.S., Canada and 1st Nations peoples), the Caribbean, and our own place on this small planet- Vermont with our beloved Green Mountains being featured. Musically we are from a small planet indeed!”
