The College of St. Joseph men’s soccer team capped off an exciting week of sports for the Fighting Saints, with their 9-1 win over Hampshire on Saturday, Oct. 17. The soccer team started the week with a tough 0-1 loss to Southern Maine CC on Oct. 14, where they shot the ball an impressive 24 times, but were unable to find the back of the net. The volleyball team wrapped up their season playing in the YSCC conference tournament on Saturday. They played hard, but were unable to beat Paul Smith’s in the quarterfinal match-up. Here is a closer look into how the week unfolded.
Oct. 14
The CSJ men’s soccer team lost in a neck-and-neck battle against Southern Maine CC in a game that ended with a final score of 0-1. There were no goals scored in regulation play. Two minutes into overtime, Harrison Charwat scored the game winning goal off a perfect pass from Steve Rwendeye for Southern Maine.
For the Saints, it was as simple as not being able to put the ball in the back of the net. CSJ outshot the Seawolves 24 to 12 and put a staggering 16 of their shots on goal. The Saints dominated possession of the ball, staying in attack mode the entire game.
Oct. 17
Saints volleyball faced Paul Smith’s in the first round of the YSCC conference tournament on Saturday. CSJ played well together and showed just how much they have improved throughout their first season as a team. The Saints had many long volleys and communicated well, but it was not enough to take down a more experienced Paul Smith’s team. CSJ lost the match 0-3, but were close in every set. They look forward to building off this season and coming into next year ready to compete.
The men’s soccer team hosted Hampshire in a game that ended with a final score of 9-1. The Saints were led by Dominick Simpson, who leads the YSCC in both goals and points. He was able to bang in a staggering five goals throughout the match, giving him 18 total goals on the season. Kyle Milligan, Brian Nation, and Roosevelt Baessa each added a goal. This win earns the Saints the number one seed in the YSCC conference. Playoffs will begin Oct. 23 and is hosted by NHTI.
