Young cast members ready for the upcoming production of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” at Rutland Intermediate School.
RUTLAND — The Rutland Recreation Department has a busy weekend ahead, brimming with activities.
The 11th annual Leaf Chase 10K will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17. Lace up those shoes and hit the dirt in this fun run/walk on the Carriage trial. It’s a low-key race, fun for all ages and abilities. Pre-register at rutlandrec.com for $20, or register at the race for $25. The fee includes a long-sleeve t-shirt and a lunch at the end of the race. Meet at Giorgetti/Pine Hill Park to be transported to the trail head in Proctor at 9:30 a.m. Race day registration will end promptly at 9:15 a.m. This will be the Rutland Rec’s last trail race of the season.
The second session of rock climbing also begins on Saturday, Oct. 17 and the Rec Department is now taking registrations. They offer a wide range of levels from beginner to advanced. Staff from the Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center will assist in learning all aspects of climbing.
Hands On Minds On art studio is offering a Clay Fairy/Gnome Houses Day on Friday, Oct. 16 (a day off for Rutland schools) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for grades 3 – 6. Bring wild imaginations to design, create and decorate a magical fairy/gnome house made out of clay. To break up the day, other activities will be offered. Participants will go home with their own masterpiece to be displayed in a room or in the garden. Dress for a mess, and bring outdoor clothing as well, plus a lunch. Class is limited to 12 participants so register early. The fee is $50 for Rutland city residents and $61 for non-residents.

The Rutland Youth Theatre is also gearing up for the spooky season with its production of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Rutland Intermediate School’s Theatre. Produced and directed by Saskia Hagen Groom, it’s the classic story adapted into a comedy with music. Tickets are $8 students and seniors and $10 adults.
