International Safe Walk to School
The annual Safe Walk to School event took place on Wednesday morning, Oct. 7. KES students and parents departed at 7:35 a.m. from Casey’s Caboose parking lot to walk the path through the woods up to school.
Field trip to OMYA and the Vermont Marble Museum
On a recent sunny day Killington’s third- through sixth-graders visited the OMYA calcium carbonate quarry in Florence, Vt. Andy McIntosh, an employee at OMYA headquarters, conducted a tour of the quarry. For some, this was their first time learning about rocks and quarrying in Vermont, while others have been studying rocks and soils in Vermont since the start of the year. The students were able to pick out a piece of rock from the quarry to take home (brownie points for remembering what kind of rock that was—sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic?).
After a picnic on the green in Proctor, the group visited the Vermont Marble Museum. Guides, chaperones, and teachers led the students through the museum in search of fun facts about the marble industry in Vermont. Students learned that the Vermont Marble Company was once the largest of its kind in the world! The group was also able to watch the museum’s head sculptor at work in his shop, and some lucky students even got to take a piece of sculpture home
Coming up: the district spelling bee
The district spelling bee will be held on Friday, Oct. 9, at 9:30 a.m. in the Woodstock Union High School-Middle School’s Teagle Library in Woodstock Vt. Participating in the bee are fifth-graders Gaven Schain and Ben McKenna, along with veteran sixth-graders Alex Martell, Evan Joaquin, Taylor Blodorn, and Maria Sell.
