Sunday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. — ORWELL — Enjoy a guided autumn trail ramble at the Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell on Sunday, Oct. 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. Historian Bill Powers and site interpreter Paul Andriscin are the leaders. This is the last event of the 2015 season.
The focus is military logistics and supply during the American Revolution on Mount Independence. How did the Americans plan the construction and garrisoning of the Mount Independence defenses, how did they use the existing terrain, and what were the challenges of bringing in the necessary supplies? See evidence of this history on your walk.
Powers, a retired Air Force officer with 40 years experience with military supply and logistics, has researched many areas of Vermont history and gives a variety of history programs. Andriscin is a long time site interpreter at Mount Independence and teaches American history at many area colleges.
Mount Independence is located on Mount Independence Road, six miles west of the intersections of VT Routes 22A and 73 near Orwell village. Mount Independence, a National Historic Landmark, is one of the best-preserved Revolutionary War sites in America. Carefully follow the signs. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children under 15, and includes the guided walk, and access to all the trails. The site is open daily through Oct. 12.
