Saturday, Oct. 3 at 5 p.m. — POMFRET — The newly-formed Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) at the Prosper Valley School in Pomfret has decided to continue a long-running tradition of hosting an annual PTO fundraiser, the Harvest Supper, and will expand the community to not only include the Pomfret community but also Bridgewater families, parents, students, and neighbors as well.
All are welcome to attend the 41st annual celebration of this fall event on Saturday, Oct. 3. Last year, the event raised about $4,500, which went directly back to supporting needs for students and classroom teachers. This is the only fundraiser the PTO hosts each year.
Parents and students from Bridgewater and Pomfret will be cooking turkeys with all the fixings, mashing pounds and pounds of potatoes and asking local folks to bake pies – approximately 60 pies are needed for the event. Sixth grade students will continue the tradition of waiting tables and selling raffle tickets for the beautiful baskets, which are created by each classroom and then raffled off. Raffle tickets are $1 each.
There are only three seatings (5 p.m., 6:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.) and all seatings are expected to sell out. Tickets are $12 per adult and $6 per child age 12 and under. The Harvest Supper began in the early 1970’s, when a group of parents got together to start the first kindergarten in Pomfret. The town agreed to allow a class to be held in the town hall building, however, the town was not able to fund the kindergarten teacher’s salary.
Not to be discouraged, the pioneers that started the Pomfret kindergarten found ways of funding their dream, which included proceeds from a Harvest Supper. The kindergarten has become an integral part of our school, but the Harvest Supper has endured and is now the Prosper Valley School PTO’s main fundraiser, now in its 41st year.
