Fourth annual Sophomore Career Summit expects 500 to participate

CASTLETON—On Oct. 8 the Rutland Region Workforce Investment Board’s Council on Youth will collaborate with the high school counselors of Fair Haven Union, Mill River Union, Mount St. Joseph Academy, Otter Valley Union, Poultney, Proctor, Rutland, and West Rutland to organize the fourth annual Sophomore Career Summit.

Sophomores from across the Rutland region will meet at the summit to discuss critical issues surrounding financial literacy and attend panel sessions designed to be an opportunity for tenth-graders to explore their career interests and gain information directly from the business community. Panelists are represented by over 68 industry volunteers from across 26 career pathways.

Based on the average starting salaries in their chosen field of work, this highly interactive event introduces students to the realities of preparing a personal budget. They will make decisions on the typical needs of living arrangements, food, transportation, communications, entertainment, and savings. They will also receive financial counseling and learn the meaning and impact of “credit ratings.”

This year approximately 500 sophomores are expected to attend the event at Castleton University from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This has all been made possible by sponsorships totaling over $11,000.
