Sunday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. — HUBBARDTON — It’s autumn and time for the annual Mount Zion hike in Hubbardton. Join Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site interpreter Carl Fuller for a guided walk up craggy Mount Zion on Sunday, Oct. 4 from 2 to 5 p.m. Enjoy the winning combination of colorful and sweeping fall mountain views, the history of the Battle of Hubbardton, and exercise in the fresh air. This is the 18th annual hike! At the top of Mount Zion, Fuller will relate interesting stories about the July 7, 1777, Revolutionary War Battle of Hubbardton, Mount Zion’s role in the battle, the people of Hubbardton at the time, and the landmarks to be seen from the summit.
Meet at the Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site visitor center before 2 p.m. After a brief orientation everyone will drive to the start of the hike, which is easy to moderate. The fee is $3 for adults and free for children under 15, and includes visiting the museum and battlefield.
The Mount Zion hike is a moderate climb and follows a trail developed by land owner Kit Davidson. From Mount Zion there are lovely views of the Taconics, lower Green Mountain range, and Adirondacks, and is the only on-land vantage point to easily see the entire battlefield.
The Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site is on Monument Hill Road six miles off VT Route 30 in Hubbardton or seven miles off exit 5 on US Route 4 in Castleton. Carefully follow the signs. For more information, call 802-273-2282.
