Sunday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m.—ORWELL—To celebrate September’s Vermont Archaeology Month, come to the Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell on Sunday, Sept. 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. for a special Hike into History program with Stephen Zeoli.
Zeoli will use the Revolutionary War’s historic Wintersmith map of Mount Independence as a guide for exploring the Mount as it was in the summer of 1777. Discover sites shown on the map that still have traces to be seen today, and see some Revolutionary constructions not documented on the Wintersmith map.
Zeoli is president of the Mount Independence Coalition, is a former caretaker at the site, and has written a short book, “Mount Independence: The Enduring Legacy of a Unique Place,” now in its second edition. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and dress for the weather.
Mount Independence is located on Mount Independence Road, six miles west of the intersections of VT Routes 22A and 73 near Orwell village. Carefully follow the signs. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children under 15, and includes the guided walk, and access to all the trails. For more info, call 802-948-2000 or visit www.historicsites.vermont.gov.
