CSJ weekly athletics roundup

RUTLAND — It was another action filled week of sports for the Fighting Saints, led this time by the men’s soccer team. They won their first two games of the week before being defeated in a heartbreaker against Maine – Machias 0-1 on Sunday. It was also the opening weekend of games for College of St. Joseph’s first year volleyball team.

Sept. 8

College of St. Joseph men’s soccer team faced off against a tough SUNY – Cobleskill team and came out with a 4-2 victory. The game was led by Dominick Simpson, who scored the first two goals of the game to put the Saints up 2-1. CSJ never looked back after that point, scoring two more goals and putting the game away. The four goal game marks the most goals the Saints have scored in a single game this season.

Sept. 10

Men’s soccer was back at it in a home game against VTC, where the Saints were able to win 2-1 in dramatic fashion with an overtime goal. Everything was going right this week for Saints’ forward Dominick Simpson. He was able to punch in the game winning goal two minutes into overtime. The game defining play could not have happened if it were not for the deadly accurate through pass delivered by Keven Andrade. This edge of your seat game showed the Saints’ character and that is a good sign this early in the season.

Sept. 12

The CSJ volleyball team got its season started with a three-game day at Unity College. The Saints played hosting team Unity. As to be expected, the Saints struggled at first to put points on the board. The team is still getting to know each other and  learning important fundamentals of the game. They lost the three matches, but progressively got better as the day went along. They were able to score more points in every set and came very close to winning.

CSJ men’s soccer lost in a neck-and-neck game against Maine – Machias. They were  unable to find the back of the net in a game where they had seven shots on goal. This loss marked the end of a three game winning streak for the Saints, but they are ready to start a new one.
