Cascading crash on Business Route 4

WEST RUTLAND—On Thursday, Sept. 10, state troopers responded to a mid-afternoon multi-vehicle crash on Business Route 4 in front of the Sunoco station in West Rutland. Upon arrival police found two vehicles in the lane of travel: a 2005 Nissan Maxima, driven by Kim Simons, age 21, of Poultney, and a 2008 Subaru Outback, driven by Jeff Hathaway, age 31, also of Poultney. A third vehicle, a 2003 Kenworth dump truck, was parked down the road just east of the incident. The driver was identified as Stephen Rogers, age 47, of Center Rutland.

Investigation revealed that Simons and Hathaway were headed westbound on Business Route 4 when Hathaway came to a legal stop in the roadway to make a left hand turn into the Sunoco station. Simons had allegedly fallen asleep, and did not see Hathaway at a stop in front of her. Simons’ car then struck Hathaway’s, which forced the cars into oncoming traffic, where Hathaway made contact with the dump truck driven by Rogers.

Simons and Hathaway were transported to RRMC to be evaluated for possible injuries. Drugs or alcohol do not seem to be a factor in this crash. All three drivers were wearing their seat belts, police reported.
