Plymouth Notch antique apple fest features seasonal treats, recipe contest

Saturday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. — PLYMOUTH NOTCH — The first annual Plymouth Notch Antique Apple Fest will be held at the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Coolidge Site has held a harvest festival for many years, but this year’s event has a whole new twist, with historic apples as the theme. Visitors can tour the new heirloom apple orchard with its rare antique apple varieties, or join the fun of apple tossing and peeling apples with an antique kitchen implement.

New this year is the “Anything Apple” recipe contest. Contestants are asked to bring their entry to the Coolidge Museum & Education Center on Sept. 19 between 10:30 a.m. and 12-noon. A hand-printed or typed copy of the recipe should accompany the actual culinary creation. Any recipe containing apples will be considered. Contestants may submit two different recipes for consideration. Only original or old family recipes will be eligible. Recipes will be judged on originality, presentation, and taste.

Special fest guests include Anne Collins, author of the highly acclaimed “Vintage Pies.” At 1 p.m., she will tell stories about the old recipes that she has discovered.

A variety of activities are scheduled throughout the day: Heirloom apple orchard tour  at11 a.m. and 1 p.m., cheese making, cider tasting & tours at the Plymouth Cheese Factory, Heirloom apple sampling, old time fiddler Adam Boyce, children’s activities, sheep shearing and wagon rides, lunch at the Wilder House Restaurant, featuring harvest recipes, Vermont artisans, “Anything Apple” recipe contest winner announced at 12:45 p.m. Apple-inspired art, apple treasure hunt, hands-on history and Coolidge Foundation book sale at the one-room schoolhouse.
