Bicyclist killed by driver who fell asleep

PAWLET — On Monday, Sept. 7, at approximately 3:38 p.m., members of the Vermont State Police, Rutland Barracks, responded to a motor vehicle crash involving a bicycle.

Investigation revealed that 21-year-old Kathleen E. King, of Wells, Vt., fell asleep behind the wheel of her vehicle, causing her to drive into the wrong lane of travel, and striking Dr. Robert A. Agne, at 54-year-old Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Granville, N.Y., who was riding his bicycle on Route 30 in Pawlet.

Dr. Robert A. Agne was pronounced dead at the scene.

King was transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center. She was not wearing a seatbelt, according to police. Her 2000, maroon, Subaru Outback was deemed totaled.

The Vermont State Police were assisted by the Pawlet and West Pawlet Fire Departments, and the Granville Rescue Squad. The Vermont State Police is urging drivers to be cautious when traveling near pedestrians who are on a bicycles.
