CSJ athletic teams open season on strong note during first week in Sept.

It was a thrilling opening week of sports for College of St. Joseph’s Fighting Saints, highlighted by the success of the baseball team, who threw three shutouts on their way to a 4-0 record over the weekend. Softball showed signs of a strong season to come, winning three out of four games, while men’s soccer won their home opener in a close battle against Paul Smith’s on Sept. 5.

Sept. 1

CSJ’s fall season began with men’s soccer going up against the Johnson State Badgers. The Fighting Saints battled hard and outshot the Badgers 20 to 8, but were unable to put the ball in the net, losing 0-2 in the heated season opener.

Sept. 5

The Fighting Saints went 4-1 collectively on Saturday, led by the baseball team sweeping NHTI in their double-header. The Lady Saints split their doubleheader against NHTI, winning their first game with a 2-0 shutout, and losing their next game in a tough 3-6 battle. The men’s soccer team played an exciting match, which was decided in the 84th minute with an impressive go ahead header goal scored by William Lima for the 2-1 victory over Paul Smith’s.

Sept. 6

Baseball and softball had doubleheaders at UNH, where they dominated the competition. Saints baseball pitched two consecutive shutouts while scoring 13 runs in the first contest and nine in the second. The Lady Saints also swept UNH with consistently strong offensive performances up and down their lineup. These are good signs for both teams with early success in the opening weekend of the the fall season.
