Poll: Sanders surges ahead of Clinton among N.H. voters, 44 to 37

First poll showing Bernie Sanders in the lead

By Anne Galloway, VTDigger.org

A Boston Herald-Franklin Pierce University poll conducted on Monday puts Sen. Bernie Sanders ahead of Hillary Clinton. According to that poll, 44 percent of respondents said they would vote for Sanders, while 37 percent would cast ballots for Clinton.

In March, Sanders was way behind Clinton in the polls, garnering only 8 percent of potential votes from respondents. At that time, 44 percent of respondents said they would vote for Clinton.

The two candidates aren’t far apart in favorability ratings at this time. Clinton is liked by 80 percent of respondents, while 76 percent say they favor Sanders.

Most respondents (65 percent), however, believe Clinton ultimately will be the Democratic presidential candidate. Only 11 percent say Sanders could become the Democrats’ candidate in the general election.

The survey was conducted by RKM Research and Communications from Aug. 7 through Aug. 10. The poll is based on responses from 442 randomly selected likely Democratic presidential primary voters, according to a statement from the Boston Herald and Franklin Pierce. Interviews were conducted by landline and cellular telephone. The sampling margin of error is +/- 4.7 percent.
