Peter Austin Hike, 67, of Pittsfield, died Sunday Aug. 9, 2015 at his home.

He was born March 27, 1948 in Roslyn Heights, Long Island, N.Y., the son of Harold and Shirley (Stockwell) Hike.

He graduated from Darien High School and went on to attend The University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.

In 1971 he married Elizabeth (Royer) Hike. He worked at the Killington ski area for 36 years as the night manager of the Peak. He had a 20 year tenure as a substitute teacher and computer technician at the Killington Elementary School. He volunteered as a VINS and Four Winds teacher, presenter and co-coordinator for 22 years. He was also a parent volunteer for their daughter Megan. He was a lister and zoning administrator for the town of Pittsfield. He helped coordinate the building of Pittsfield’s current playground. In the summer he worked for Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary on Cape Cod

He was an avid skier and taught for Killington and the Elementary School. He was also a skate boarder, surfer, scuba diver, sailor, sailboarder, and bicycle racer. He built houses, rebuilt computers and cars; you could count on Peter to fix just about anything.

Surviving are his wife Elizabeth of Pittsfield and daughter and son-in-law Megan and David Wolkoff of Las Vegas, Nev.

He was pre-deceased by a sister and is survived by a loving extended family.  He will be deeply missed by his friends and community.

A celebration of Peter’s life will be held Saturday, Aug. 22, at 3 p.m. at the Killington Elementary School.

Arrangements are under the direction of Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Contributions may be made to The Peter Hike Endowment Fund at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, PO Box 236 South, Wellfleet MA 02663 or The Prouty: Friends of Norris Cotton Cancer Center, One Medical Drive, Lebanon, NH 03756

We appreciate all the love and support that was given during his illness.
