Aug. 7-9 — BARNARD — BarnArts Center for the Arts is staging a 90-minute production, “The Jungle Book Kids,” in early August with performances at Barnard Town Hall at 7 p.m. on Aug. 7 and 8 and at 2 p.m. on Aug. 8 and 9. The performances are the culmination of the annual Summer Youth Theatre Institute, a camp for children that this year is engaging 25 young people ages six to 16. A talented team of performance professionals is guiding rehearsals at Silver Lake Chapel in Barnard before the cast moves across the road to the Barnard Town Hall for performances, including full staging and a live band to play the jazzy score. This ensemble production holds the entire cast on stage for most of the songs, with youngsters changing characters from wolves to snakes to elephants to monkeys while the jungle beat goes on.
Amber Gleason, 14, of Woodstock plays the panther Bagheera; Adam Farinas, 16, of Barnard is the jiving bear Baloo; and Jaclyn Hazen, 9, of Sharon is the man cub Mowgli, to name a few of the memorable characters who leap from this rendition of Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book,” written in the late 19th century as a series of magazine stories based on Kipling’s childhood in India.
