Saturday, June 27 at 10 a.m. — RUTLAND — The Rutland County Habitat for Humanity affiliate is planning a ground-breaking event to celebrate their first home – a house rehab at 30 West Street in Fair Haven. To kick off this project, the board has announced a “building block” party on June 27 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Anyone interested in lending a hand or well-wishers just looking to share in the excitement are invited to stop by and enjoy the complimentary barbecue or help build the yard shed. Festivities will include standard barbecue fare, balloons for the kids and live music for entertainment – a little work and a little fun to commemorate this “first build!”
Habitat for Humanity International granted affiliation status to Habitat for Humanity of Rutland County, VT Inc. (HFHRC) in 2014. Chris Heintz, Board President says, “We are so thrilled to get started with the real task of creating affordable housing in Rutland County. The process to get here has taken longer then we anticipated, but we are excited to be starting our first home. With any luck we will have our first family in a rehabbed home by the fall of 2015.”
The current house on site at 30 West Street will be salvaged, but stripped for renovation and a full makeover, both inside and out. A partial foundation repair, new plumbing, new roof, energy efficient appliances and windows, as well as insulation plus repairs throughout will provide a qualifying family with a very affordable, interest-free mortgage on a 1,200 sq. ft. home. The West Street neighborhood will benefit from the improved aesthetics to a home that is currently an eyesore and in desperate need of some TLC.
Anyone seeking information on how to apply for family selection or interested in joining the project or assisting with Habitat for Humanity should call 802-747-7440.
