Saturday, June 13 at 10 a.m. — GRANVILLE, N.Y. — New Slate Valley Museum (SVM) Executive Director Krista Rupe invite everyone to the SVM Community Day, a free celebration of community and education activities honoring the museum’s 20 year legacy on Saturday, June 13 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with twenty things to see and family games to play in the Alley.
Visitors will be able to explore the museum’s new exhibition “20 Objects, 20 Years of Sharing Slate Valley Stories: The Industry, The People, and The Stone.” The exhibit showcases a collection of historic objects, documents, photographs, and other items hold the many stories that are connected to the Slate Valley.
The SVM Community Day will also serve as a day for the neighborhood to meet their new director. “We’re opening our doors to welcome families from Granville, the Slate Valley, and beyond to enjoy a day of fun at the museum,” says Rupe.
The museum will have a selection of games that children would have played in “The Alley” when they originally immigrated to America at the turn of the last Century. Including hopscotch, bocce, hoops, quoits (Irish ring toss), checkers, dominoes, marbles, jacks, pick-up sticks, tops, yo-yo-ing, skipping ropes, and more.
“The Alley” is a neighborhood featuring immigrant row houses and several liquor-serving establishments. Once known as a raucous locale to some and as home to others, the site has been transformed by the Village of Granville into a Cultural Campus featuring two museums, one being the SVM.
All ages are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served.
