KILLINGTON — We are only five games into the season and there is already a candidate for “Game of the Year.” Slips, Trips and Falls (STF) has been in the league for a while now but this season they are sporting a new roster of players and these guys playing together for the first time gave The Garlic McGrath’s (TGM) a battle of epic proportions. On top of that, STF was playing a man short and only had nine guys on the field.
McGrath’s struck first, both with hits and a “Cold Beer K” by “Tweed Bus” Bob Schaffner but was able to build a 3-0 lead behind a two run triple by Zach “Cookie” Cook who later scored himself. STF’s rookie pitcher Aaron Haskell had a shaky second inning as he walked the first two batters and then Nate Mispel made him pay and drove them in with a triple. Cook matched his first inning exactly with two more RBI’s and a run scored. Cliff Melendy matched Schaffner in the “CBK” department but TGM was already out to a 9-0 lead.
STF was able to break the shutout in the bottom of the second to make it 9-1 but could not stay away from the walks as they walked a whopping five batters in the third. They walked the bases loaded and walked in a run. TGM made it 11-1 and had a chance for a lot more but Coach Jamie Rameau suffered a “CBK” with the bases loaded. STF settled down in the fourth and had their first error-and walk-free inning plus added another “CBK,” this time to Dola Holland.
Unfortunately they went back to their bad form in the fifth, walking three more batters which lead to TGM expanding their lead 13-4. STF held TGM scoreless in the sixth, mounted their comeback and finally broke through against pitcher Jeremy Prior with six runs to get the closest they had been since the first inning. Denel Mcintyre and Holland drove in a run a piece to help TGM take a 15-10 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
That was not enough because STF got a miracle inning and tied it at 15-15 to send it to extra innings!
STF was literally on a see-saw ride throughout this game, one inning their form was up and another it was way down. They’re very fortunate to not lose the game in the eighth as they loaded the bases with back-to-back-to-back walks but were able to deliver “CBK’s” to John White and Melendy to end the inning.
STF could not complete the comeback, it was a valiant effort for such a new team but unfortunately the walks cost them the game as Haskell walked in the winning run and then Cook drove in two more to make it an 18-15 victory for TGM.
Cook finished the game three for seven with three hits, three runs scored, three walks and six RBI. STF’s Haskell finished the game with a record 16 walks but eight “CBK’s.”
New team welcomed with two losses in two games
Clearly Moguls welcomed the Sum Boss Bombers to the league and handed them a 10-3 loss. CM got all their runs in the first two innings and were able to hit through their order in the second. Neal “That Ball Flew like a Birdie” Giberti blasted a three-run home run which was his and the team’s first of the season. CM is happy with their new acquisition Tall Tom Gilligan who was near perfect going three for four with a RBI. Jeremy “Jackie Blue” Livesey was pitching for CM and was able to remain undefeated (6-0) in his career as Ronzoni Hacker’s Sub. He delivered two “CBK’s” but suffered one of his own. Coach Vince “The Boss” Chiarella drove in “Ru” Paul Perry to put the Bombers on the board in the third for the team’s first run of the season. They added two more in the fifth behind a long single from Rob “Norty by Nature” Norton. Chiarella started pitching and then brought in David “Loco” Concepcion for relief and he helped in keeping CM scoreless the rest of the way. He handed DJ Dave Hoffenberg his first “CBK” of the season but Hoffenberg got even when he snagged a deep line drive hit by Concepcion to save some runs.
The Bombers immediately played The Killington Deli Team and started off with a mixed first inning. “Happy” Jack Scott and Erica “Out of Retirement” Hurd both began the game with “CBK’s” but then Chiarella drove in two runs but that would be the only lead they saw. TKDT hit through their order in the first scoring eight runs. They were held scoreless in the second but added four in the third behind Cam “No Rain” Rainwater’s first home run of the season. Scott suffered another “CBK” but Hurd and Paul both scored to cut the lead 12-4. TKDT gets the hit machine going and handed The Bombers their first mercy loss of the season.
