Hiker’s stolen backpack recovered

CLARENDON—On June 1 at about 11:30 a.m. Sarah Dayton, 23, of Stockbridge, came to the Rutland State Police Barracks to report that her hiking pack and walking sticks had been stolen at the Long Trail trailhead on Route 103 in Clarendon. Dayton said she had set the bag and sticks down in the parking lot while she was waiting for a ride and someone took them while she had her back turned. Dayton described a full-size green pickup with ladder racks and a large sticker of a deer head on the rear window. By tracking a cell phone inside the pack, Trooper Justinger was able to locate the pack, which a concerned citizen had picked up on the side of Route 103 not far from the Gorge trailhead in Clarendon. Anyone with information about the theft is encouraged to contact the Vermont State Police at 802-773-9101. Information can also be submitted anonymously online at www.vtips.info or  text “CRIMES” (274637) to Keyword: VTIPS.
