Raising Cane
Thursday, May 28 — BENSON, SUDBURY — The Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s “Raising Cane” Woodwind Trio will present performances at schools in Benson, Sudbury, and Addison on May 28.
“Raising Cane” is always a big hit in schools, say VSO organizers. Oboist Ann Greenawalt, clarinetist Steve Klimowski, and bassoonist Janet Polk are all excellent performers with years of experience turning kids on to classical music. Their show focuses on the unique sounds of the three reed instruments, making the analogy that musical timbres are the composer’s palette of colors. Students are engaged in participatory exercises designed to familiarize them with these ambassadors from the woodwind family and sharpen their listening skills.
These performances are part of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s statewide SymphonyKids education program, which reached nearly 31,000 schoolchildren last year with 272 presentations serving 201 schools in 165 different communities. The VSO’s traveling ensembles visit all corners of the state as part of an outreach program known as the Lois H. McClure “Musicians-in-the-Schools” Program. These lively concerts are met with overwhelming enthusiasm, as the musical ambassadors spread the word that classical music can be fun!
The trio will visit Benson Village School at 9 a.m. then travel to Sudbury’s Country School, at 10:45 a.m. before heading further north to Addison Central School at 1:30 p.m.
The Vermont Symphony Orchestra is the only professional statewide orchestra providing live musical experiences for listeners in Vermont. It is a state-supported non-profit institution founded in 1935 and exists for the purpose of fostering and encouraging the appreciation of music in all its various forms, with emphasis on orchestral, choral and chamber music.
These school visits were made possible with the help of funding from the Albert F. and Hilda Woodruff Gollnick Fund.
