Friends of Middletown Springs Public Library host first annual Gardening Festival


Two young boys, with a little help from their canine companion, are busy transplanting plants for the upcoming gardening festival in Middletown Springs.

Saturday, May 30 — MIDDLETOWN SPRINGS — Experienced and novice gardeners alike are in for a delightful day on Saturday, May 30, at the Friends of the Library’s Gardening Festival in Middletown Springs, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., on the Green.

Shop for plants and garden items, sit in on a free workshop, and meet the “Gardening Guy” Henry Homeyer, you may have seen his column in the Rutland Herald or heard his commentaries on VPR; now come hear his talk, “How to Eat from the Garden Year Round.”

Gourmet, homemade pizza by the slice and hand-scooped ice cream with optional sprinkles will be on sale from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Schedule of workshops

10 a.m. “Can I can? Yes, you can! … Canning Basics” with Ken Carter, local farmer and life-long canner (Soaring Meadows Farm).

11 a.m. “Get some culture in you! … Fermentation” with Leslie Silver, Vermont Fermentation Festival organizer.

12 p.m. “The Dirt on Dirt: Soil Sustainability” with Paul Morgan, Morgan Mountain Organic Gardeners.

1:30 p.m. “How to Eat from the Garden Year Round” with Henry Homeyer, a.k.a. “The Gardening Guy.”

The Gardening Festival is organized by the Friends of the Library with all proceeds from the festival to be used in support of the Middletown Springs Public Library.
