Friday, May 22 at 10 p.m. — KILLINGTON — The Sherburne Memorial Library was awarded an Ashgate Foundation Grant at the end of 2014 to purchase two telescopes for programs at the library. Currently, they have purchased one Orion refractor scope and one reflector scope and with huge thanks to Paul Otavsky of West Woodstock, they are put together, balanced and ready to go!
The first stargazing program is scheduled for Friday, May 22 at 10 p.m. at the library on River Road in Killington.
Saturn is at opposition, which means the ringed planet will be at its closest approach to Earth and its face will be fully illuminated by the sun. It will be brighter than any other time of the year and will be visible all night long in the constellation Libra. The hope is to get a good look at its rings and a few of its moons.
This program is free and open to the public. Both scopes will be used, and folks are encouraged to use star charts on their iPads or other devices. No knowledge of the stars is necessary. Bring the family and a lawn chair and enjoy the view. If skies are cloudy that evening, the event will try again on Saturday, May 23. For more information visit www.sherburnelibrary.org.
