The Palms to open second location
LAKE BOMOSEEN—The Sabataso family, owners of The Palms, the popular Italian fine-dining restaurant in Rutland, is opening a second location at Prospect Point Golf Course on Lake Bomoseen, with summer scheduling to begin by June 1 and continuing into October. Called The Palms at Prospect Bay, the new restaurant will feature Italian favorites, salads and appetizers, and traditional golf course/lake restaurant fare, plus nightly specials, according to owner Jay Sabataso. Amenities include indoor and outdoor seating, with light evening and Sunday afternoon entertainment in July and August.
Firearms complaints settled
CASTLETON—Castleton’s Development Review recently helped settle a longstanding string of complaints between local gun and sporting goods dealer Dan Amrick and his neighbors. Some of the neighbors had complained of gunshots and explosions, concerns that Amrick had felt were exaggerated. Zoning administrator Jeff Biasuzzi will write a letter of mutual understanding, to be approved by the DBR and sent to Amrick. He must disallow shooting, legally post the land with No Trespassing signs and register them with the town clerk, post No Shooting signs, and inform his customers about the new policy.
Operating under the name United Trade, the business sells high-end, high-dollar firearms by appointment only and displays no signage. Nor does it sell ammunition or include a shooting range. As it is, police records note only four firecalls for explosions, gun shots or suspicious activity between January 2011 and March 2015. Each police visit records that officers spoke with Amrick at the time, according to Police Chief Peter Mantello.
Congratulations
to Green Mountain Mountain College Jude Chisom Erondu, recently named winner of a national 2015 Newman Civic Fellow award by Campus Compact. The Nigerian native has held a variety of positions at the school, including student senate president as well as that organization’s director of civic engagement. He also worked as a junior director of undergraduate admissions. Off-campus, Erondu has been active in a wide range of community development activities. He collaborated with the Poultney United Methodist Church and GMC on its food drive and with the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church’s annual Rutland Meals Challenge.
to the Castleton State College Rotaract Club for receiving its official charter from Rotary International. Maria Burt accepted the award on behalf of the club. First organized in 2013, the club made a humanitarian trip to Honduras in February. Congratulations and thanks too to faculty advisor Chrispin White and elementary school teacher Caren Helm for their aid in starting the group and encouraging its development.
