¡Viva Cuba! will be on exhibit at BigTown Gallery.
Saturday, May 16 — ROCHESTER — The BigTown Gallery will host presentations and a panel discussion on U.S.-Cuban history and future relations on the afternoon of Saturday, May 16, at the Rochester High School Auditorium, South Main Street, prior to the opening reception for ¡Viva Cuba!, an exhibition of vintage and contemporary photography on view May 6 through July 12.
At 3 p.m., William Craig, author of “Yankee Come Home: On the Road from San Juan Hill to Guantanamo” will take listeners on an audio-visual tour of the roots of U.S.-Cuban friendship and conflict in the all-but-forgotten Spanish-American War of 1898. Craig will then moderate panel discussions on present and future developments in Cuban politics and society and U.S.-Cuban relations.
The panelists are: Lisa Baldez, professor of government and Latin American, Latino and Caribbean Studies at Dartmouth College; John M. Carey, Dartmouth government and social sciences professor; and Jared Carter, professor at Vermont Law School. All four writers, scholars and teachers have traveled extensively in Cuba. The public will be invited to ask questions and join in the discussion.
At 5:30 p.m., panelists and public will reconvene at BigTown Gallery, at 99 North Main Street, to celebrate the official opening of ¡Viva Cuba! The show features vintage and contemporary photographs by Susan S. Bank, Virginia Beahan, Raúl Corrales, John Fago, José A. Figueroa, Jon Gilbert Fox, Alex Harris, Alberto Korda, and Janis Lewin.
