LUDLOW — The Black River Academy Museum is in the process of repairing and recaulking all of the historic windows at the museum. The sashes are the original wooden ones and have not been modified with the addition of weather stripping or storm windows. This maintenance must be done every so many years; it is an ongoing expense of the museum, board members report. However, the upgrades will be reducing the museum’s energy consumption and carbon footprint. Eventually, the museum plans to add storm windows, either inside or outside, while maintaining the integrity of the historic windows.
The project was begun in May 2014 by Mark Mudgett & Sons and is on schedule to be completed by this May. The cost of this maintenance project is over $94,000. The Historic Preservation Trust of Vermont has provided a grant that has helped to offset the cost. Visitors will see the new windows this June when the Museum will open for the 2015 season.
