Skim the pond at Killington’s spring rite of passage

By Jerry LeBlond

Few participants succeed in making it across the pond… most do not! The crowd favorites are always for the most spectacular crashes at Killington’s pond skim.

Saturday, April 4 at 11 a.m. — Killington Resort’s wacky rite of spring, the Dos Equis Pond Skim takes place on Saturday, April 4. Skim the pond yourself or watch while others try to make it across the water hole set up at the base of Superstar Trail at K-1.

Registration will open at 9 a.m. at the Roaring Brook Umbrella Bars. The entry fee is $10 (cash or check only). There will be no pre-registration for this event. This event is open to both skiers and snowboarders and is limited to the first 100 registrants. Remember your costumes, as prizes are awarded!

All participants must fill out an Express Assumption of Risk Form. If you are under 18, you will need a parent/guardian to sign your form. Rules: All participants must be 48 inches or taller to participate. There will be a mandatory competitor’s meeting at the top of the pond at 10:45 a.m. Please remove all valuables (jewelry, watches, sunglasses, etc.) prior to your skim. Killington will not be held responsible for any items lost in the pond. No ski poles or nudity.

The event starts at 11 a.m. and competitors run in bib order. Don’t be late or you will not get your turn to skim the pond! Once the event starts, it runs very quickly, so be ready even if you have a high number. If you fall into the pond on your skim, please do not try to walk out of the pond. Wait for our staff to pull you out and get you to the reinforced exit area. Following this procedure will help us to ensure the pond does not rip and drain out prematurely. Follow the rules, or you will be disqualified!

Awards follow the skimming at 1:30 p.m. at the Roaring Brook Umbrella Bars. Awards will be given to top male and female in each category:

Best overall skim (made it across the pond)

Best costume

Biggest splash (didn’t make it across the pond)

Best 14 & under overall skim

The Judges’ Award (one award only – male or female)
