RUTLAND–Rutland Regional Medical Center’s Andrea Borchlewicz, a registered nurse (RN) with Rutland Women’s Healthcare, was honored for excellent care by the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, a peer-elected awards program. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.
Borchlewicz, a registered nurse at Rutland Regional since 2013, was nominated for the care and compassion she shows towards her patients and her dedication to educating new mothers on the benefits of breastfeeding.
“Andrea promotes patient education, especially regarding breastfeeding and many times has helped turn around a mom who was having difficulty in this area by providing supportive advice, helpful solutions and words of encouragement,” said colleague Christine Auer, RN. “Several patients have attributed their recommitment to breastfeeding to the assistance and care given by Andrea.”
“Andrea’s clinical skills and especially compassionate care exemplify the kind of nurse that our patients, their families and our staff recognize as an outstanding role model,” said Tom Huebner, president and CEO, Rutland Regional Medical Center.
The DAISY award ceremony, held before colleagues, honored Borchlewicz with the “Extraordinary Nurse” certificate, which reads: “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.”
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was started in Glen Allen, Calif., by family members of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. As a way of thanking Barnes’s nurses, his family established the award program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses everywhere perform every day.
