A chamsah, or “hamsa,” is an ancient symbol used as a sign of protection and to provide defense against the evil eye. Literally meaning “five,” it is depicted as three outstretched fingers, with a thumb – or out-turned pinkies – on either side.

Sunday, March 15 at 3 p.m. — RUTLAND — Leading up to the Vermont Jewish Play Contest in April, actors from Burlington-based Theatre Kavanah will perform a full-length play reading of one of the winning plays, bringing an exciting new work alive. The Theatre will be performing “Show of Hands” by Jessica Fleitman, the Jewish Plays Project Playwriting contest 2015 finalist, on Sunday, March 15 at 3 p.m. at Rutland Jewish Center.

As the story goes, Sarah was born with two thumbs on each hand – a real-life chamsah. Will her musical gift lead her back to the father who abandoned her as a small child? The image of the chamsah, the mystical hand inherited by Jews from the Muslim world – forms an emotional backdrop to this fascinating familial tale.

A discussion with the actors follows the reading. Admission is free with the contribution of an appetizer and/or wine; donations will be accepted. RSVP to 802-773-3455. The Rutland Jewish Center is located at 96 Grove Street, Rutland.
