“Abandoned” puppy turns out to be rescue effort by owner

PUTNEY–On Feb. 25, at 8:30 p.m., the Vermont state police received a report of an abandoned puppy on Bare Hill Road in Putney. A black Labrador retriever puppy was discovered in a metal crate in the middle of the turnaround. The puppy was left with some dog toys, but without food and water. The citizen who called in the report said he came upon the crate and puppy in the turnaround when he happened down the road. The dog was housed overnight at the Windham County Humane Society, where her owner collected her the following day.

The investigation revealed that “Emma,” who had been recently rescued, had been out for a walk on a trail off Bare Hill Road in Putney with her new owner and slipped her collar and ran off. She didn’t come when called, and the owner made several attempts to find her.

Early on Feb. 25, the day she was discovered, the owner borrowed a live-trap from the Windham County Humane Society and placed it on Bare Hill Road. Emma went into the trap, resulting in her rescue.
