Friday, Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m.—RANDOLPH—Come and hear the future of music on Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m. when local indie bands, TallGrass GetDown and Coquette rock Chandler Music Hall! Last spring these two bands took first and second place at Chandler Center for the Arts’ first Beat the Band contest. This show will be something of a reunion for TallGrass GetDown, who was the top band in the contest but took a performing hiatus last fall. Meanwhile, second-place winner Coquette has been on the rise with critical acclaim and a growing fan base.
TallGrass GetDown is a self-described “folkalicious fellowship” that originated in Johnson, Vt., as a collaboration between John Freeburn (guitar and vocals), Dave Langevin (keyboards and accordion), and Django Koenig (vocals and drums). Original members Langevin and Koenig will return with new musicians to fill out their sound. Influenced by traditional blues and folk musicians, they’re also inspired by all those who bring out their dancing shoes to see live music, and their goal is to show you a good time!
Coquette is an energetic alternative rock band with Franco-Anglo roots. Brothers Cobalt Tolbert (guitar) and Titien Tolbert (drums) met Angus Davis (bass) on their first day of high school, and the three have been making music together ever since. They went through several incarnations and played in different styles, most notably as Carter Glass, an acoustic cover band. As their songwriting developed, they decided to perform their own material under a new name and became Coquette in spring 2013. Since then, they have played frequently at Sweet Melissa’s in Montpelier as well as other clubs and festivals.
Influenced by progressive rock, punk, and metal, Coquette has gained a reputation for both raw creative energy and tight, disciplined musicianship. In September 2013 they released “The Mandrill EP” on Green Mountain Records. “Separatio” followed last November.
