CSJ weekly athletic round up

Dre Anderson continued his strong play this past week to lead the Saints to the No. 4 spot in the USCAA coaches poll.

The College of St. Joseph women’s basketball team was able to stay atop the USCAA rankings, and the men moved up to now sit at No. 4 in the poll. The men have a 15-11 overall record and the women are at 17-5.

Wednesday, Feb. 4

The Saints men fell short against Vermont Tech, 81-72, and lost for only the second time in their conference this season.

Vermont Tech’s Jamal Hughes had a lot to do with their win, as he had 30 points on 12-19 shooting. The Fighting Saints’ Dre Anderson continued his strong play and had 20 points, while point guard Josh McAfee added 17 off the bench.

The Lady Saints also took on Vermont Tech and were able to get the win, 80-57.

Chontayvia Kennedy had a spectacular night leading the Saints with 30 points, while Regina Steele was able to provide efficiency, shooting 8-11 with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Thursday, Feb. 5

The CSJ women took on Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and won by a score of 77-62.

CSJ’s Chontayvia Kennedy put up 27 points along with 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Regina Steele proved to be a force in the paint, as she had a rare form of triple-double with 15 rebounds and 10 blocks, while also adding 12 points.

The CSJ men got back to their winning ways and were able to battle and hold off Albany of Pharmacy and Health Sciences for a 73-57 win. Steven Edwards and Josh McAfee combined for 9-15 from deep, while Kashean Alston had 17 points, shooting a very proficient 7-9 from the field.

Saturday, Feb. 7

The Lady Saints took on NCAA Division I opponent NJIT, and lost by a score of 92-39. Regina Steele had 14 points, followed by 11 points from Jazz Laracuente. NJIT’s Leah Horton lead all scoring 17 points.

Coming up

The Saints men’s and women’s basketball teams close out their regular seasons this week. The final home games will be a double header on Thursday, Feb. 12, against Hampshire College. The women take the court at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m. The games will be streamed live by STCN.

The final regular season games will be on the road against Eastern Maine Community College at 6 and 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13.
