VSP announces promotion of Captain Ingrid R. Jonas

Effective Jan. 11, Lieutenant Jonas of Waterbury was promoted from Lieutenant, Commander of the Internal Affairs Unit, where she has served since 2012, to Captain. Captain Jonas is the first female to hold that rank in the Vermont State Police. Her new assignment is Commander of the Staff Operations Section. On Jan. 21, Vermont State Police director Thomas L’Esperance announced the promotion.

“Captain Jonas is a hard working member of the State Police committed to the goals of the organization,” said L’Esperance. “Her promotion is a significant milestone in the history of the Vermont state police and we look forward to having her as a member of senior command.”

Captain Jonas has served with the VSP since 1998 and has spent her career in various positions, mostly within the criminal division, including assignments to the special investigations units, specializing in sex crimes and crimes against children. Her initial assignment was as a trooper at the St. Albans Barracks. Prior to police work, Jonas worked as a victim advocate and educator regarding domestic and sexual violence. Captain Jonas grew up in Vermont and holds a bachelor’s degree from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N. Y.

As Commander of the Staff Operations Section, Capt. Jonas will oversee several aspects of the state police operations, including recruiting and training, internal affairs, professional standards, and being an integral part of the Fair and Impartial Policing Committee. Captain Jonas is replacing Captain David Notte, who transferred to the position of C-Troop Commander covering the Rutland, New Haven, and Shaftsbury Stations.
