Vermont State Police report on Holiday safety campaigns

Two fatalities reported

The Vermont State Police participated in the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign as well as Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend from Nov. 26 through Nov. 30, 2014.

Sadly, there were two fatalities on Vermont roadways over this holiday weekend. There have been 42 total fatalities in Vermont so far.

The Vermont State Police responded to; seven impaired related crashes, 245 total crashes, 19 DUI arrests, and 469 speeding tickets and assisted over 188 motorists.

The winter storm on Wednesday evening forced the cancelation of several planned sobriety checkpoints.

The December holiday enforcement campaign will begin on Dec. 10 ending Jan.1, 2015.

The national Holiday Click It or Ticket campaign, sponsored by Vermont’s Governor’s Highway Safety Program, is an effort to encourage safe travel, for every trip. GHSP awards federal highway safety grant funds to local, state and not-for-profit agencies for projects to improve highway safety and reduce deaths and serious injuries due to crashes. The GHSP also works closely within a network of state and local agencies, non-profit organizations and private-sector partners to deliver quality traffic safety projects, services, and information across the state.

Operation CARE is a national campaign by state police agencies across the country that have joined together in the endeavor of reducing human suffering on our highways, particularly during the national holidays.

Formed as a multi-jurisdictional program, Operation CARE is committed to the patrol, enforcement, and activity planning for the purpose of accident reduction. Since 1977 several organizations have joined with Operation CARE in a combined effort to deter the three key causes of highway fatalities: speeding, impaired driving and failure to use occupant restraints.
