Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. — BRANDON — Brandon Music is delighted to welcome, all the way from Russia, the vocal group, the St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. The Ensemble offers a program that helps introduce audiences to Russian spiritual music, as well as to get acquainted with the unforgettable diversity of picturesque and expressive Russian folk songs. The program will include Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “All Night Vigil” (also referred to as “Vespers”), “Opus 37” and Nikolay Kedrov’s setting of “The Lord’s Prayer.” A few of the Russian folk songs include “In the Dark Woods,” “Barynya,” “I’m Alone When Entering the Road,” a poem by Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov, the most important Russian poet after Pushkin’s death in 1837, and the “Song of the Volga Boatmen,” possibly the best known folk song in the world.
The St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble formed as an independent group in 2003 in order to bring to its audiences compositions which, in normal circumstances, require a large number of performers. This talented quartet has developed an extensive repertoire encompassing a wide range of works from ancient Russian chants and chorals of Western Europe to modern music. The Ensemble is comprised of Kirill Sokolov, Sergey Shapinskiy, Andrei Volikov, and Vadim Smantser.
The St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble has a mission to bring joy and through music – the language of the soul – unite all of us in harmony and love. Those who heard their previous performances at St. Thomas’ Church in Brandon will not want to miss this exclusive appearance.
