Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. — MENDON — The Mendon Historical Society will hold a special meeting on Thursday, Dec. 4 at the Mendon Town Office at 70 p.m. Greg Sharrow, Executive Director of the Vermont Folklife Center, will present a program entitled “Vermonters of Many Cultures.”
Vermont is often described as culturally homogeneous, and yet there is a long history of cultural diversity in urban centers, particularly in Rutland. Sharrow’s talk will feature slides, exploring the vitality of Vermont’s immigrant communities including the growing refugee populations of today in Chittenden and Washington counties. He will highlight family celebrations, foodways, religious culture, and traditional arts as they relate to personal and family identity.
Sharrow holds a PhD in Folklore from the University of Pennsylvania and is a former Vermont classroom teacher. He helped the town of Mendon record the memories of townspeople and publish a book on Tropical Storm Irene.
The program is free and open to the public, with refreshments. For more info, call 802-773-8172.
