Pentangle presents “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”

Friday-Sunday, Oct. 24-26 — WOODSTOCK — Pentangle Players present “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at Woodstock Town Hall Theatre. Considered one of the most enduring shows of all time, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s irresistible family-friendly musical about Joseph the Dreamer is coming to the Woodstock Town Hall stage with an ensemble of talented actors and musicians.

Performances are Oct. 24-25 at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 26 at 2 p.m., Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Nov. 2 at 2 p.m., at the Woodstock Town Hall Theatre. Special performances for area schools will be held on Oct. 29 at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Joseph takes place “not long after the Bible began” in the land of Canaan and Egypt. The Narrator (played by Lanni West) opens the show to relay the story. Joseph (played by Joseph Guarino) is his father’s favorite child, able to interpret dreams, and is the recipient an amazing gift: a coat of many colors. These facts lead Joseph’s eleven brothers to become insatiably jealous. Thus, they sell him into slavery. After refusing the advances of his owner’s wife (played by Mary Ann Stanford), Joseph is sent to jail. Once in jail, he quickly becomes popular due to his ability to interpret dreams. The Pharaoh (played by Paul West) soon hears of Joseph’s special ability and appoints him to the post of Number Two man in Egypt. Years later, Joseph’s now starving brothers arrive in Egypt and ask Joseph, whom they don’t recognize, for assistance. Joseph, in turn, gives his brothers a scare, but eventually grants them all they desire, reveals his identity, and reunites the family.

Directed by Sharon Groblicki and choreographed by Claire Shillen, Pentangle Arts’ production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” will entertain the entire family. “Great cast, great band, great music —  I’d say it all adds up to a great show! And a few surprises (wink wink),” says Musical Director, Bob Merrill.

Pentangle Players not only includes a rich field of talented local actors, but also the artistry and skills of dancers, singers and choreographers. The youth chorus adds generational depth and flair to the overall production.

Joseph blends pop, country and rock into an uplifting, technicolored story of biblical proportions. This magical musical is full of hit songs, animated with a high-energy mix of music and dancing from 50’s rock to calypso to country western. Joseph is hailed for its family-friendly storyline, universal themes and catchy music.
