ArtisTree Gallery opens “Local Color” as its inaugural exhibit

Friday, Oct. 10 at 5:30 p.m. — S. POMFRET — ArtisTree Gallery is celebrating, not only the beginning of it’s 5th year as a center for visual artists in the area, but also the first exhibit in it’s new home in South Pomfret. While the activity in the barn  has been humming along since the Grand Opening on Sept. 13, ArtisTree is ready to catch up and open it’s doors on what might be considered it’s more contemplative side.

“When ArtisTree initially started up,” remarks Adrian Tans, the gallery’s director, “the very first show was ‘Local Color.’ It seems like a good sign to start again under the same banner.” While it does appear to be a good sign, it’s also a convenient way to allow artists in the area to feel a connection with the new space by having the opportunity to exhibit there right from the start. The gallery thrives primarily through it’s close connection to artists working locally in almost any media.

Visitors will be curious to see how this new space compares with the former facility in the Mt. Tom building. Being all on one floor, perhaps the most fundamental difference between the two spaces, the gallery is laid out with flow in mind. Whereas the old gallery was rife with folks negotiating bottlenecks at the often packed opening receptions, the new layout is more circular with larger doorways and fewer intersections. Another difference that will be noted is the feeling of space; tall ceilings and greater square footage improves not only the viewing, but also the breathing room. One thing that won’t be different is the quality of work which, from it’s inception, has been strong and varied work representing the talent here in the greater Woodstock area – the local color.

The exhibit opens Friday, Oct. 10 with a reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and runs through Nov. 15. A free concert with FiddleFunk will follow, with Chris Bakriges and Stanley Chepaitis, in ArtisTree’s performance hall.

ArtisTree Gallery continues to promote local and regional art through a variety of sorter, original shows which strive to bring high quality art together with the appreciation of the local viewing public.
