Sunday, Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. — RUTLAND — In an expansion of the newly installed exhibition technology, The Paramount Theatre will be enhancing the HD experience by adding “Live in HD from the National Theatre of Great Britain” during the 2014-2015 season. This internationally acclaimed program, which mirrors the “Live in HD from the Metropolitan Opera” will debut at The Paramount on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014 at 2 p.m. and will continue throughout the 2014-2015 season. All broadcasts will be shown at 2 p.m. The fall series will unfold as follows:
Encore broadcast: Sunday, Sept. 21 at 2 p.m., Euripides’ “Medea” in a new version by Ben Power, starring Helen McCrory, Michaela Coel, Danny Sapani and Cath Whitefield and directed by Carrie Cracknell.
Medea is a wife and a mother. For the sake of her husband, Jason, she has left her home and borne two sons in exile. But when he abandons his family for a new life, Medea faces banishment and separation from her children. Cornered, she begs for one day’s grace. It’s time enough. She exacts an appalling revenge and destroys everything she holds dear.
Encore broadcast: Sunday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m., Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar named Desire,” produced by the Young Vic/presented by National Theatre of Great Britain, starring Gillian Anderson (“X-Files”) as Blanche Dubois and Ben Foster (“Lone Survivor,” “Kill your Darlings”) as Stanley Kowalski.
As Blanche’s fragile world crumbles, she turns to her sister Stella for solace – but her downward spiral brings her face to face with the brutal, unforgiving Stanley Kowalski. Visionary director Benedict Andrews returns to the Young Vic following his Critics’ Circle Award-winning “Three Sisters.”
Encore broadcast: Sunday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m., Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” starring Benedict Cumberbach (“12 Years a Slave,” “Star Trek: Into the Darkany Lee Miller (“Trdainspotting,” “Mansfield Park”) alternating roles as Victor Frankenstein and his creation.
Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered Creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal. Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale.
Encore broadcast: Sunday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m., David Hare’s “Skylight” starring Bill Nighy (“Love Actually,” “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”) and Carey Mulligan (“Inside Llewyn Davis,” “The Great Gatsby”) and directed by Stephen Daldry (“The Audience”). Skylight is scheduled to open on Broadway this fall season. South central Vermont audiences get an advanced look at this searing revival of an acclaimed contemporary drama.
On a bitterly cold London evening, schoolteacher Kyra Hollis (Carey Mulligan) receives an unexpected visit from her former lover, Tom Sergeant (Bill Nighy), a successful and charismatic restaurateur whose wife has recently died. As the evening progresses, the two attempt to rekindle their once passionate relationship only to find themselves locked in a dangerous battle of opposing ideologies and mutual desires.
