Lothrop Elementary motivates students to recycle shoes

PITTSFORD–On Friday, Sept. 5, Lothrop Elementary, in partnership with ShoeBox Recycling, introduced a school-wide shoe recycling program. Students, faculty, families, and community members are all encouraged to participate by discarding gently-used shoes in the ShoeBox recycling bins placed in the front entryway of the school, U.S. Route 7 in Pittsford.

With over 300 million pairs of perfectly reusable shoes hitting landfills each year, ShoeBox Recycling, a for-profit recycler of shoes headquartered in Fairless Hills, Penn., collects shoes for reuse by those in need of affordable footwear.

“Shoe recycling needs to become as familiar to us all and as easy to perform as bottle, can, and paper recycling,” said Lisa Pomerantz, Queen of Sole at ShoeBox Recycling. “Our shoes can live on and help people across the world while we inspire a new generation to act responsibly.”

Lothrop Elementary is excited to become a part of a meaningful program that encourages its students and the community about small steps that have a large global impact, such as recycling shoes for reuse.
