Sunday, Sept. 7 — PLYMOUTH NOTCH — The President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site welcomes four outstanding regional musicians for the Grace Coolidge Musicale on Sunday, Sept. 7. Abigail Charbeneau, Roger Ellsworth, Gary Hodges, and Bozena O’Brien will perform in the Coolidge Museum & Education Center at 4 p.m. Refreshments follow at the site’s restaurant, The Wilder House. The 45-minute concert is free and open to the public; donations are welcome.
This is the first quartet to be featured in the Musicales series. The program begins with the Sonata in B minor by baroque composer Jean-Baptiste Loeillet. The mood dramatically changes with Johannes Brahms’ Piano Quartet in C minor, Op. 60. Brahms nicknamed the quartet the “Werther” after the hero in Goethe’s novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, a tragic tale of unrequited love. The storyline parallels Brahms’ own personal life and his close friendship with Robert and Clara Schumann. This quartet will serve as a romantic grand finale to the 2014 Grace Coolidge Musicale season.
