New poetry book to benefit the North Universalist Chapel Society

Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 5 p.m.—WOODSTOCK—Area poets will read from a newly published collection of their poetry on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 5– 6 p.m. at the Norman Williams Public Library in Woodstock, Vermont. The event is free. (They will reschedule in the event of rain).

Stick around at 6 p.m. for the trumpet sounds of Caroline Spencer who usually plays taps and a tune or two outside the library to bring an eloquence to the day’s end.

“Wednesday Poets: A Collection” is an anthology of poems by ten local poets with a forward by Dr. Leon Dunkley, Jr., minister of the North Universalist Chapel Society, Woodstock. This poetry collection is offered as a fundraiser for the church in gratitude for hosting the weekly group meetings in the North Chapel Library. As Dr. Dunkley says, “This poetry invites us into the nooks and crannies of life, leaving the reader with a surprise splash, as poet Blair Brooks writes.”

Participating poets, drawn from the greater Woodstock area, include Pam Ahlen, Peggy Brightman, Blair Brooks, Jon Escher, Laura Foley, Debby Franzoni, Jill Herrick-Lee, Brooke Herter James, Wendy Ann Smith, and Sarah Dickenson Snyder. A founding member, beloved physician Blair Brooks, died in 2019; he is dearly missed. Cover artwork is by Jill Herrick-Lee; Wayne Thompson assisted the group through the publication process.

Books are available through the North Universalist Chapel Society (NUCS) in Woodstock by contacting Peg Brightman at pbri@aol.com to reserve a copy. The full price of the book at $15 will go to support the NUCS. Books are also available through the independent bookstore, The Yankee Bookshop (12 Central St. in Woodstock/ 802-457-2411). A portion of the cost of the book will go to the church.
