WEST PAWLET — The Vermont State School Nurses Association has recognized Mandy Mayer, full time school nurse and health educator at the Mettawee Community School, as School Nurse of Year 2014.

Mettawee Community School Principal Brooke DeBonis shared this news with the school faculty and staff via email shortly prior to the opening of school.

DeBonis said of Mayer, “I have had the privilege of working with Mandy for the last ten years. She is an amazing person who has many skills that make her stand out as an exceptional school nurse. She is knowledgeable, a strong leader, professional, and is trusted by students, parents, and our staff.”

Following notification of the state’s recognition Mayer said, “School nursing is an ever-changing, challenging career because of the variety of health conditions we now see in our school buildings. I really work hard to ensure all children have their health needs met so they can safely and comfortably be here learning each day.”

Mayer said that she feels school nurses are “in such a unique and valuable position to help all children set a healthy foundation for their lives.” During a school year Mayer helps students build better nutrition habits, fitness, and overall wellness that helps them to be better learners, friends, and community members. She added, “I feel like a school-mom to all of them!”

Mayer’s enthusiasm for health and wellness and dedication to the school workplace do not stop with the students. Principal DeBonis said, “Mandy is professional, prepared, and an amazing leader. Each year Mandy leads the school in many trainings. For example, she trains the Mettawee staff with our annual OSHA training and allergy training. She is creative, engaging, and always seeks the newest information to teach all of us.”

In receiving the award, Mayer reflected, “I love promoting healthy living through being a role model and teacher as well being the school nurse. The magic of school nursing happens in the simple moments that I share with a child, staff member or parent. I am honored to have received this wonderful award and recognition. I truly could not ask for a more rewarding way to spend my days.”
